Whickham Rainbow Society is a pupil led LGBT+ advocacy group where pupils lead the way promoting LGBT+ inclusion within school and the wider community by forging relationships and networks across the region with others committed to promoting equality and diversity. Their mission is to celebrate differences & champion the rights of everyone to be who they want to be.
In School, the Society, who meet every week continue to:
- Raise awareness and increase the visibility of LGBT+ people through, displays, initiatives; special assemblies and whole school Citizenship Days, where staff and pupils speak openly about their own experiences;
- Welcome guest speakers to speak frankly about their own personal journeys;
- Offer friendship and source specialist support for those who need it;
- Plan, co-ordinate and host our Annual Whickham School Diversity Week;
The Society continue their fundraising and advocacy outside of school through their Partnerships with Northumbria Police, Pride, Pride Radio, Fun Palaces, Northumbria University and Northern Pride.
The Rainbow Society is jointly co-ordinated in school by Mr Robinson and Ms Hall.
I’m delighted to see the Whickham Rainbow Society go from strength to strength. The work carried out by pupils of all ages is inspiring for our next generation of LGBT+ and allies across the North East. The support Northern Pride has received over the years, from fundraising to even appearing on our main stage has enabled us to demonstrate how important it is to show equality and tolerance at such a young age.
