Key Stage 4
At Whickham School pupils start their Key Stage 4 studies (generally GCSE and BTEC programmes) from Year 10 going through an options process during Year 9.
All pupils follow a common core curriculum which prepares them for life beyond Whickham School. This comprises the following qualifications:
- GCSE English Language, and GCSE English Literature;
- GCSE Mathematics;
- GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or GCSE Combined Science;
- A choice of Physical Education qualification from GCSE PE, Vocational sport, Sports Leadership or Core PE;
Pupils also get to choose additional qualifications from a wide range of subjects however most choose to study an English Baccalaureate curriculum by including a Humanity subject (Geography or History) and a Modern Foreign Language (continuing with either French or German from GCSE).
Pupils who are likely to progress into further study in Maths after Year 11 can also choose to complete an after-school Further maths qualification.
